Looking for something a little different from your traditional summer cottaging or camping excursion this year? How about something very different? Whitewater Cottage & RV Resort on the Ottawa River now offers something that is radically new to the Ontario vacation getaway and staycation experience: Traditional Mongolian Yurts.
What is a Yurt?
Known as a “ger” in Mongolia, Yurts are a traditional dwelling in Central Asian nomadic cultures. Somewhat similar to a tent, the yurt is the product of ancient savoir-faire that has been perfected over hundreds of years. A yurt is a circular domed abode, with a solid floor and wood structure, wrapped in a weather-hardy fabric. It’s not a tent and it’s not a cottage… it’s a yurt, something truly unique! Beautiful and ornately decorated, Whitewater’s yurts sleep up to 4 guests, and they represent the perfect combination of glamping and eco-friendly vacationing for any traveller searching for an insta-worthy and unique experience.
An authentic experience
Whitewater’s luxury yurts are actually made in Mongolia and imported by Alexandria, Ontario-based Groovy Yurts, using mostly natural products and hand crafted by a Mongolian family on a principle of fair trade. Mongolian Yurts are sustainable, leaving no footprint and comprise of organic material such as felt insulation and horse hair ropes. Groovy Yurts has been exporting yurts from Mongolia to North America and Europe since 2003. As part of its commitment to sustainability, Groovy Yurts supports local Mongolian felt production and a tree nursery dedicated to planting 25 trees for every yurt sold.
What’s it like to stay in a Yurt at Whitewater?
It’s glamping at its best! A yurt is cozy and spacious. Whitewater’s yurts are furnished with beds and linens for a comfortable and relaxing stay. Electricity and lighting are on premise, as well as a log burning stove for cooler evenings. A fire-pit and picnic table are stationed outside each yurt for campfires and s’mores under the stars. Washrooms are available just a short walk away.
Granted, Whitewater Cottage & RV Resort may not be able to replicate the deserts and mountains of Mongolia! But for a Canadian setting, the Ottawa River valley is definitely a great place to yurt.
Imagine waking up and walking out the door to savour your morning coffee while overlooking the Ottawa River and surrounding forests under breathtaking skies. Yurts make for a wonderful stay regardless of season, a great way to enjoy the freshness of spring, the warmth of summer or the colours of the fall.
